I'm chronic. 15 years. Been taking Calan SR for 8 years. Verapamil is the generic of Calan SR. I've been taking 720mg a day for 8 years. No side effects for me. I do get a blood test done every 6 months or so to make sure I'm OK. But the test is mainly for other medicines that I swallow.
