I agree that the smoking/drinking connection has been overstated - however you can also look at the survey results and see that 62% of us smoke at least a little and 75% drink at least a little - I suspect that both of these numbers are higher than the % for the entire population.
So my read on these numbers is not that we are all not heavy smokers and drinkers - I think we already knew that - but rather we do tend to smoke and drink a little bit more than the average bear.
