I agree with the others, you are probably not an idiot. I am going to keep my response rather short, and explain the best way I can how I try to tell people about the CH's that don't understand. I tell them to remember the last time they ate ice cream too fast and got that old "Brain Freeze". Those last about 5-7 seconds. I tell them to multiply that feeling, like the side of your head is melting away from your skull, and imagine it lasting from 30 minutes to two hours at a time, with small reliefs in between, only to begin the whole process again.
That's the quick version...
