One of the most prized gifts I ever received was a nice pen set. Nice pens may be purchased individually or as part of a set with either a matching pencil, matching letter opener, or both.
Another gift I have received was a nice lighter. Of course, this really only makes sense if the intended recipient is a smoker and has some use for it!
Neither of these cost the world but are a big improvement over the cheapo throw-aways!
One final note. I you are ever at a complete loss as to what to get a guy there is one option most folks are not aware of ( anybody laugh and I swear I'll knock ya right up the afflicted-side of your already bruised melon! ): flowers and/or candy!! It is quite appropriate and O.K to give these as gifts for a guy. Guys like chocolate too!! They will be quite suprised and respond positively. Rather than responding with "Oh my God, not more flowers and candy" one could expect "Cool, I've never gotten these before"!
