A recent study showed that patients taking melatonin at night had reduced headache frequency (compared to placebo) and used far fewer headache medications. The headaches did come back after stopping melatonin. Besides increasing serotonin (5HT) in the brain , melatonin also works as an antioxidant. It is a strong free radical quencher thus protecting the body from harmful charged particles that damage the cells. That is why mice lived a third longer and why it can help fight cancer and aging.
It is safe with children too. They have been shown to be less hyperactive and moody when using small doses of melatonin at night.
