As you can tell from the other posts, an “atypical cluster headache” is basically any kind of CH that’s different in any way from what doctors read about in their med-school textbooks. In my case, the clusters are atypical because my eyelid never droops, my nostril never gets congested and doesn’t run, the pain is in my eyeball, which never gets bloodshot or teary, instead of behind it, my lower teeth as well as my upper teeth ache, and I have long attacks of six to eight hours in length with breaks of about twelve to sixteen hours in between, instead of a series of short attacks with short breaks in between, etc., etc.
In fact, it’s pretty much the case that the only thing that’s really NON-atypical about CH is pain on one side of your head that’s so horrible that it can’t be described. If you haven’t actually felt cluster pain, then you have no idea what real pain is.
