Recently, my son went through surgery (successfully) to preserve his life and my father wentr through surgery (unseccessfully) to preserve his. I cannot imagine the feelings of losing a spouse. I cannot offer any great philosophy or religious explainations, but I will share a poem I wrote in my school days. It communicates the way I view my own eventual death and I TRY to apply it to losing others. I wish you peace of heart and mind and think all who read your posting benefit from it.

WHEN I GO

Bury me beneath the spreading limbs
of a young oak or maple,
where autumn leaves spill over the ground and
sunlight reaches through,
drying them to a crackling brown.

During the spring, as the
blanket of snow is pulled back,
branches will swell, buds will rise, and
I with them.

So, when you visit,
look not down upon the cold earth,
but up at the lush green around you,
for I am there.

Gaze upon the nearest tree,
remembering my strength in the rough trunk and sturdy limbs,
feeling my love in the sheltering shade, and
recognizing my laughter as the leaves rustle in the cooling
