You're mule tale was very appropriate. My opinion: Carl needed a swift kick in the butt to get him over his pity party. Only then will he start making some headway (no pun intended). You're message is timely and appropriate.
We all have need of a message like this every so often (at least to some degree). Many times I've gotten to feeling sorry for myself, wondering if and when the cluster would end. Really on a downhill slide. Gotta stop, take a breath and make a decision! Am I giving up or gonna fight the bastard.
Actually sounds to me like he needs to stop the meds & booze. Get his system cleaned out and start afresh.
