I have to echo Riccardo's thoughts -- it's very important to let the doctor know what's up, and to take corrective action. CH's are bad but they're not worth dying for. Even on a day with a couple of 10's, there are many enjoyable hours between the aches.
My doctor also advises me to take an aspirin each day, one of the 90 mg low-dose kind, watch the fatty foods and keep my cholesterol low, and it has eliminated the small amount of chest pain I used to experience with my Imitrex years ago. Perhaps there is something similar your Dad can do.
In any event, keep your courage up and tell your Dad we're praying for him!!
