Ms. Barr,
I know that this will sound sacriligious to you, but I seriously doubt that anyone, even Our Lord, would prefer cluster pain to a spike through the hand. Cluster pain is more than just a headache. Rather, it’s indescribable, excruciating agony. I used to try to describe the pain of a cluster attack to people lucky enough never to have felt one by saying that it felt like sticking the eraser end of a pencil through your eyeball. Well, one day, I actually tried sticking the eraser end of a pencil through my eyeball, just to see what that really did feel like. Please believe me when I tell you that I could have pushed that pencil through my eyeball until it popped out of its socket and comparing the puny pain that that would have caused to cluster pain would be like comparing a leaky faucet to Niagara Falls. Now, I just tell people that, if they haven’t actually felt the cluster pain for themselves, there’s simply no way to describe it to them.
After three hours of hanging on the cross, Jesus was dead. After three hours of cluster pain, you won’t even have passed out and the only way to die is to kill yourself. AND THERE IS NO CURE!
