Not sure I know exactly what your problem is from your explanation, but try this if you have a wheel-mouse: hold down the Control key and turn the wheel on the mouse. One way will increase the text the other will decrease it.
Or go to View on the menu and select Text Size, you will be offered a choice of text sizes.
