Sorry to hear you didn't get much help from your GP. My experience and others I know is, GP's aren't really too educated in ADHD or ADD. I say try, try again. I know a doctor who stated there was no such thing as ADD in adults, that was a childhood disorder. I'd first look for a psychiatrist who specializes specifically in ADHD/ADD. Those are the people who can evaluate you for meds. Also, read up on the symptoms, so you can see if you fit the picture. Ritalin and other stimulants are abused, especially by high school students but that is no reason why someone can't get the help that thousands others get. Can you imagine if that was the philosophy for every medication? Good Luck.
