Last year, a 7th grade LD student of mine attempted to read Animal Farm. I thought it was too "deep" for him, but his English teacher ok'd it. He had to write a summary after each chapter. After just a few chapters, I could see that he was not getting Orwell's depiction of democracy, utopia, politics, or anything close to that. He wrote in one summary that a pig could not do these things----only a human could. I tried to explain to him what Orwell was trying to say. I told him that the pig was a sort of illustration of someone running a country. I asked him if he could think of someone running a country that was like Major in Animal Farm. He said "Bill Clinton is pig."
