Bill
I don't "crave" light during an episode but I don't like dark rooms either....not enough distraction.
Give me loud music, something to bang my head on, and room to thrash and pace! ...anything for distraction from the pain.
My son is non-verbal so I can feel some of your frustration...but... he is able to use eye gazes and nods and a computerized augmentative device. I pray you continue to search and hopefully find some hint of communication with him. I know you communicate your love and concern and that matters... whether it appears to or not.
I have met several autistic kids in various programs and classes that Adam is in. I always felt so stupified at what might cause them to pattern activities which obviously hurt themselves. Your post has me wondering if my head banging and pacing etc..aren't vaguely related to that. Mine are definitely conscious efforts to achieve distraction.
I've never said it with more heartfelt conviction than that whuch I say it to you now...God bless you and comfort you and your family.
