Thanks everyone for the useful comments. Mary - I'm in the UK so lactulose is lactulose! Well I'm pleased to report that at 2.30 GMT, just as it seemed that the bottom had dropped out of my world, the world dropped out of my bottom :-).
I think the preventative route is the way I'll go in future, though I've never had the problem up to now.
I am happy to report that my pain from top to tail seems to be subsiding satisfactorily. I will think strongly for all you guys out there and wish the community well.
Although I haven't been able to contribute much over the past few weeks, I have found it to be a major source of support and re-assurance during this recent cycle.
I wish painfree times ahead for all of you.
