The purpose of an MRI scan is to rule out anything other as cause of the headaches. It can NOT positively diagnose CH. The extra gray matter (every clusterhead is so proud of) does not show in a single scan. Dr. Goadsby had to do a sophisticated averaging of scans of many CH brains and compare them to a 'normal' control group to find this small difference.
