You're right that the ergots have been around longer than the triptans. But the ergots do work. I've used cafergot for over 20 years (episodic) with pretty good results. The triptans (especially injectable) are faster acting and more specific in dealing with the vasso dialation along with some chemical pain transmitters in the nerves. Actually the "Ask Doc Greg" button has some info on it.
