My wife watches me in pain (again and again) and feels the frustration of not being able to help at all. However, I try to tell her that she can and does help greatly. Fighting the pain and despair takes a great deal of energy. I find over time that I have less energy to fight and need to find it somewhere. This is where I ask for her help. I need distraction and I need to stay in touch with the "real" world. I love her very much, but can be a very selfish and demanding person when in CH mode. It is not directed at her or because of her. I recently watched my 1 year old son and 56 year old father go through major surgeries and rehabs where I could do little more than coach a praise. Perhaps, the family could become more involved with the teatment, such as recording side effects, measuring response time, surfing the net for CH data, corresponding with doctors, etc. Maybe that would help the family feel like more of a team.
