Bear in mind that 'genetic' means based in the genes. Hereditary means passed down (through the genes) within a family.
There are many factors which might affect the development of the human fetus and cause changes in the genes or in other aspects of development. Remember thalidomide?
I share Joe's enthusiasm for the human genome project (although I beleive 'the next few years' to be an overly optimistic projection for the completion of this gargantuan task).
And in reading the text Ted quoted, if only 3-4% of male clusterheads and 7-10% of female ch'rs have the suspected gene, I'm hesitant to accept this as anything beyond speculative.
