When I first started having clusters, it was the white-hot railroad spike in the temple. Then, after thirty years, it changed. Then, after thirty years, The Demon became a traveling man. The pain is in my eye or in my cheek or in my teeth, one after the other and never all at once, but this does happen in the course of a single attack. That is, the pain may start in my teeth. Then it leaves my teeth and goes into my cheek. Then it leaves my cheek and goes into my eye and back down to my teeth, passing through my cheek again on the way back. The Demon just marches up and down the side of my face. The agony is hellish in all three locations, but it’s at its worst in my eye, because of the pain spikes. In my teeth, the pain is a kind of vibration, like electricity coursing along the nerves. In my cheek, it’s a steady, unrelenting ache. But, when the pain is in my eye, I get spikes. I’ll be coasting along at a steady 8 kips or so, when there’ll be a sudden spike up to a level of pain that I don’t think Kip or anyone eslse has a number for. Fortunately, these spikes last only five seconds or so, if that. Otherwise, I think that I would have killed myself a long time ago.
