Verapamil saved me--prescribed by a neurologist in 1991(240 mg/day--120mg in AM/120mg in PM). It is a preventative drug and must be taken daily whether you think you need to or not. If I miss a dose my headaches return (keep a stash of Imitrex just in case). Prior to 1991 I was taking prescription pain killers at the onset of an attack--not good possibly addictive. I stopped using alcohol in 1991 also and that has helped also. I started feeling the effect of Verapamil within a week and experienced no side effects. Good luck!
