We keep 3 of those gel-filled ice packs they sell in camping supply stores in the freezer at all times. They don't freeze either and are completely pliable.
Mike just sticks one in a cloth gift bag to use it because it is just too cold to apply directly to the skin at first.
I guess the upside of using the store-bought ones is that if the freezer bag with the corn syrup gets punctured at all, I can't imagine the sticky mess that would just end up making the attack all that much worse.
As far as cost goes, I think we got each of ours for under $5 Canadian....that's like 50 cents US funds...ok, maybe not, but they are not all that expensive.
