I was using sublingual DHE, (dihydroERGOTomine) before bed to prevent headaches every night for about a month and my doctor made me stop. He said the reason I was getting more daytime headaches was because the ergots all cause rebound headaches. And you definitely don't want to use sumatriptan (Imatrix) if you take ergots, your doctor is right that they might kill you right then.
You might try to talk to your doctor about getting off the ergots and putting you on verapamil to help prevent heart troubles. You may want to have both a neurologist and a cardiologist working together. And going back on a two-week round of prednisone during the transition would probably keep the headaches under control.
