I've been placed on a cocktail of acetaminophen, caffeine, and butalbital. The butalbital is a member of the barbituate family and is considered habit forming according to the literature. Fun.
I'm currently on watch to see if I need something along the lines of a preventive medicine rather than something that just takes the pain away. Currently we're starting with weekly check-ins. Any episodes are being charted for frequency and duration. If there's enough evidence my doctor will approach my HMO about long term preventive treatment.
In the meantime it's the painkillers. I've decided, after reading some of the web pages out there, to experiment with changing my sleep pattern, eating habits, etc. to see if it has some effect on duration and recurrence.
