I too have used this method of a vigourous head
massage with something purchased at the body shop.
It has 3 wooden balls at the end and I'd have
my boyfriend rub it really hard on my neck and
head. Sometimes he'd give me a massage up and down
my face, head, and neck with his knuckles really
hard sometimes for 1/2 hour and it does seem to
help. Someone had told me that a vigourous massage
like that somehow tricks the nerves. Hope this
helps someone else too.
