Barbara,
Sorry it has taken so long for me to reply. I live in Charlotte, NC but am in San Francisco, CA on business. Yes, it requires a prescription or at least I have always had one so insurance will pay for it. I use LinCare which is national. They had oxygen waiting for me in my hotel room when I checked in. All I had to do was call the Charlotte office and tell them where I would be. They took care of everything else. It's very comforting not to have to worry with it. I, personally, have had more luck with doctors writing prescriptions for medicines I want to try by finding PA's (Physician Assistants) or any new, young doctors. They are aware of the benefits that oxygen has. Good luck and let me know if I can help in any other way!
