I was nineteen. The most godawful headache, located in the right temple, that there could ever be woke me up about 4:30 one July morning. The pain was so terrible, so horrible, that I was scared out of my mind. I was literally paralyzed by fear. I was too scared to move a muscle and I was almost too afraid even to breathe. About a century later, when I realized that my head was actually *not* going to explode, I began to see whether I could move without dying. I could, so I starting considering what kinds of knives were in the kitchen that I could use to cut my throat. Then, when I started to get out of bed, just like that, the pain was gone and I passed out from what I now know to have been an endorphin rush. When I woke up again, around ten o’clock, the whole thing felt like a nightmare; in real life, there just isn’t any way that you can endure pain like that and it doesn’t kill you. So, I just put it out of my mind. It couldn’t possibly have been real. And then it happened again at 4:30 the next morning. You can guess the rest. The year was 1956.
