Perhaps at the physiological level, but...

At the psychosomatic level the root of the
cause is perhaps different. I have found that, for instance LSD,
modulation of certain areas of the brain, and its
receptor binding affinities with 5-HT, its reversibility,
or lack thereof, may suggest that LSD may be working
on a different plane than most see as the pure cause
and effect, as postulated in your post. Perhaps
the secretion of hormones from the pituitary is the
end result. However, the mechanism of action for
LSD resembles mostly that found in anti-depresants
and anti-epileptics, but with different specificty for
certain repcetors, as well as different actions,
which might be receptor-based, according to the
LSD concentration utilized.
