when you are 'up' you can use the distractions around you to focus away from the pain.
In your sleep there is nothing there to to use.
If you are awake but trying to relax and get hit, try to force yourself to focus on something else.
The pain will go away.
You will have some time to relax until another attack hits.

Also you can try to focus right on the pain.
This takes abit more practice.
I can move the pain to different sections of the affected side of my head by will.
Now if only I could completely remove it!!

if only we could find a cure

PS try sleeping with your head up
