FWIW -
between my wife and I, we subscribe to a half-dozen different news/message groups - and TWO THINGS are common to them all
for some reason,a great many people communicating by internet :
A. don't take the time to carefully read what someone has posted, and think it through the way they would a letter or print media item - - they scan the message, knit together some screwy impression, and run with it; connected to this is a lack or caring (or understanding) the difference between email and newsgroups - if we have something to say that we need/want the whole group to share it should be in the newsgroup, but one-on-one exchanges, private sidebars, etc belong in emails between the concerned parties...
B. WAY TOO MANY people seem to think that interacting over the 'net is somehow different than doing so in person or on the phone - the most courteous people completely lose their manners and DEMAND information, help, etc. as though they'd put a quarter in a vending machine or they believe the rest of the world is out there solely to serve and amuse them withouta please, thank you or by-your-leave
and before you say "what the hell's this got to do with CH ? - easy ! we all need all the help we can get, and a preponderance of rude/inconsiderate postings can predictably turn off a lot of people - people who might have very valuable info to share !
there, now that I've had my hissyfit for the day, I'm gonna try to make good use of the predictable attack-free period I enjoy thru the afternoon -
