Many, many years ago, after suffering migraines since childhood, a doctor prescribed Fiorinal w/Codeine for my headaches. It was like a miracle drug. Usually, a migraine could be stopped in its tracks after no more than two dosages of 2 fiorinal capsules every four hours. I used the medication for my migraines for several years. Then, about ten years ago, I was put on various medications that I was told would be "better" and "non-addictive". I went through various of these medication routines as well as chiropracty, biofeedback, and a number of different routines. I haven't taken fiorinal in about ten years; most doctors don't want to prescribe it. I've never found anything as effective as fiorinal. Now, instead of knocking a headache in 6-8 hours, I usually just plan on a 2-day period of misery in bed, in the dark, in the cold (I've been known to turn on ac's in the middle of winter), quiet, and utterly a non-member of my family during a headache. Does anyone know why Fiorinal is no longer considered appropriate for headaches? It's a good thing I don't work and my children are grown. I'm not sure how I could function if I wasn't middle-aged and with an understanding husband who understands that 3-4 times a month I'm out of commission.
