Since I was forced to retire from the Air Force in 1987 I have had 6 different jobs.
Wayne is one of the lucky ones, I think. All of my employers were "understanding and compationate" during the first 3 or 4 days but when I was out longer, they explained their needs and hoped I understood that I had to be replaced.
Finally I gave up on the regular form of employment and became an independant courier contractor. There is always a need for someone to send something somewhere, so eventhough I am unable to work during my series (which lasts 2-3 months) I still have a "job" when I am able to rejoin the rat-race.
