You can also try this...look for a flight that stops in Vegas on it's way to LA or San Francisco. Sometimes these flights are cheaper than to just Vegas. When you get to Vegas just get off the plane and let it go on it's way without you.
PS, the airlines hate this, but hey, they cause the problem in the first place, so piss on 'em.
