Richard, I haven't had your experience, but during my previous episode I started thinking about the possibility of this thing being caused by a virus. My reasoning was that I likened the periodic occurance of episodes to that of cold sore outbreaks that occur with someone I know. Plus, I've heard doctors on more than one occasion explain symptoms which appear without cause and which dissapear over time as "probably caused by some virus".
I haven't ever discussed it with a doctor, but personally, I think it's worth further investigating.
