My family doctor is the one who diagnosed me as having cluster headaches, so I shouldn’t be too hard on him. My first cluster was 2 ½ years ago. He prescribed Fioranol and that got me through. My most recent cluster started 2 weeks ago (today). When the Fiorinol wouldn’t work, he prescribed Imetrex. This was the last of his good moves. I wanted him to refer me to a neurologist, but he wanted to try a few more things. The Imitrex takes about an hour to work for me, and an especially bad headache that I had a few days ago lasted almost 2 hours after I took my first Imitrex. I took a fioranol 10 minutes later and another Imitrex an hour after the first. I called back the next day and got his nurse, who said she would have him call me back. Then I got a voice mail from his nurse that said they would call in another prescription. This was for Somo, a muscle relaxant. It does not seem that it helps, and I did not think it would. I think he feels that there is a vascular component and a muscle component to these headaches. At this point I can’t get a hold of him because he does not work on Friday afternoons. I set up an appointment with a neurologist (I suggest you do the same), but they can’t take me until February 5th. I am anxious to try some of the preventative medications (Verapamil or Prednisone) and would almost kill for a bottle of oxygen to get me through the weekend. On Monday, I plan on calling my doctor and demanding both.
