for many reasons - in my opinion:
1. Labor and delivery can be prepared for. The mother learns to breathe correctly, she knows what to expect, she usually has tremendous support, and/or she can be given effective medication to lessen the pain if necessary.
2. For me at least, childbirth was such a welcome
event that there was enough joy and anticipation to make the pain seem worthwhile. It is a pain you can actually look forward to after nine months of pregnancy - like a drink of water to someone lost in a desert. And when it is over there is something to show for the effort.
3. The pain of labor and delivery is usually limited in duration - a few hours with each delivery. No one has to live in dread of having that pain again for at least nine months.
