Hi Gary;

I agree that many if not most of the CH sufferers I've met find Benadryl (or their knockoffs) as a great aid. I have used Benadryl more than anything else over the years, and this time I also used it as a preventative before going to bed, and had several sound nights as a fortuitous consequence. I also started using the nasal sprays (Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride 0.05%) during an attack this time, that seems to help as well.

The menthol seems to react differently with me, however. Some months ago the local supermarket was closing out a product called "Kleenex Cold Care with Menthol" tissues, and my wife brought a box home. They were so pleasant (I was not in a cycle at the time) I asked her about them, and she said they were only 50 cents a box! I went there and bought them all!

They are like the "scratch & sniff" coatings, as rubbing the tissue releases lots of menthol. One darn tissue produces lots of menthol until you've rubbed it to lint.

During a cluster I grabbed the menthol Kleenex (I could probably shoot 3 boxes during an attack, so I generally use a full roll of toilet tissue instead ) and blew my nose. The effect of the menthol was so nice, that I ran and got some fresh ones, rubbed them together, and took deep breaths from the tissue. Each tissue probably lasted for 5 minutes before it disintegrated. The combo of (perhaps) hyperventillating and the strong menthol aromas killed the attack after maybe 15 minutes.

I'm sure you know, and I'm learning, that not everything works every time. Verapamil will do it for me in the long run, but every day I try different "cures," and when a new one is found, it may only work "X"% of the time. That does show a bit of desparation, but I keep looking anyway . . .

Best Regards,
Ken
