In my years of reading I've never come across even the intimation of brain damage much less actual reports of such outcomes.
All of the various forms of ergotamine have fallen from favor given the success of the triptans (Imitrex, etc.). This is unfortunate because they are still effective and the cost is less.
Like all the drugs for CH, you may find one form of ergotamine is more effective for you than another and so some trials are worth the effort.
