Zolmitriptan Useful in Treating Cluster Headache
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LONDON, Jul 25 (Reuters) - The Anglo-Swedish drug company AstraZeneca Plc said on Monday that zolmitriptan (Zomig), which is currently used to treat migraine, is also effective for episodic cluster headache, according to the findings of a recent study.

The results of the study, which included 124 patients, showed that 10 mg of Zomig produced a significant difference in pain response compared with placebo within 30 minutes of administration, the company said.

Current options for the fast treatment of cluster headache include drugs administered by injection or inhalation of pure oxygen, company officials point out. "People who suffer from episodic cluster headaches have [fewer] options with regard to pain treatment than migraineurs," according to Dr. P.J. Goadsby of the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London.

Zomig, which had sales of $65 million in the first quarter, is not currently licensed to treat cluster headache.

AstraZeneca officials cautioned that Zomig should not be taken by people who have certain types of heart disease and that the drug may cause side effects, such as dizziness.
