When my mind is strong enough I use insight meditation (Vipasna). It never changes the sensations one bit. But I don't recognize them as pain -- just sensations. Unfortunately, most of my life I can't do that because it hurts too much for my mind to be that disciplined. If you really are that well trained, I have a lot of respect for you.
Now that I re-read your post, you don't have a terrific track record either. Keep working at it. It's a good way to deal with it.
One more thing. I'm talking to you as a person who suffers a great deal by circumstances beyond their control. You go to work one minute and are hating life the next. Ever think of a new line of work? I ask because you're a dick by career and human by nature. Are you going to be cool with firing one of us because of clusters? No offense. I just never had much respect for those who didn't have the balls to do it themselves and less for those who hired themselves out to do it.
