I'm afraid I have used the phrase "I like the idea of a book" before. As a matter of fact, within the past three months. My lawyer will contact yours. Now for the academic shit that doesn't even matter. Where did you EVER hear that a student PUBLISHING something for the first time is excluded unless they met the proper bueacratic regimen? A student is no less exempt from the copyright laws than anyone else. I think what you are considering is the new laws and rulings and the fact that professors and students were worried about primers. But the court ruling there was that primers were OK as long as the teacher/student didn't take the majority of the work for free. In other words, you can copy chapter one of War and Peace to illustrate a point. But you can not copy the entire thing and claim "educational freedom."
