Interesting you mention this method of calming and the relaxin gthe pain of CH through concentrated effort. One traditional method of easing or stopping the pain of severe toothache and headaches is to run cold water on the hand opposite the location of the pain in the head or the tooth.
A chinese method of massaging the "Tiger's mouth"
the area of the hand which consists of the muscle between the thumb and forefinger is said be helpful in the easing of pain, and it is something I tend to do out of habit, gripping this area of the right hand with the thumb and forefinger of the left, and using massaging pressure. Remarkably, this seems to help relax me in many ways, decrease the focus on pain and even to some degree ease the pain.
