Well, I can at least help you to eliminate the migraine idea. When I used to get migraines, yes it started off affecting only one side but more only during the "aura" phase (tingling fingers, lips, teeth, tongue, "floaters" on the eye). Then, once the aura was gone the pain would start. EXTREME sensitivity to light and noise, I could feel every hair on my head, eyebrows and eyelashes included. Very nauseous. Attack lasted anywhere from 8 -48 hours. Usually brought on by red wine.
So, in a rather lengthy answer to your question, no - doesn't sound like migraine to me. Just another mutation of these cluster bast**** if you ask me. My husband's CH have often switched sides on him, especially if he has been in a remission such as yours.
Have you tried ice? We use those gel-filled packs that you keep in the freezer. Sometimes works, sometimes don't.
