John, you're absolutely right. Whenever what I perceive of as a vicious, hostile, bored, lonely, fucked-up nut case slugging their way onto the message board, I often feel like Peter Sellers at the end of Dr. Strangelove, having to physically restrain my own hands from going to keyboard and responding. I find that when I'm in a cycle, especially, that's not so easy.
Maybe we should have a DR (Designated Responder) -- that is, if the first response says it all, then just let it go. No need to post line after line after of rejoinders. Basically, I agree with Kathi's post of several days ago: just ignore these people. To ignore someone is really the worst insult of all. I know it would be for me.
But hey, I know it's hard, and sometimes my hand will break loose from my own grip, and I'll let it fly. I guess I feel better, but I know it hasn't done a bit of good. It has just made the asshole of the day feel really big. Just look at all the people paying attention to ME! I'm reacting to this now because there seems to be an increasing number of jerks crawling out of the woodwork lately, and I'm constantly surprised at the bulk of attention they get -- often a lot more than someone in pain or in need of information or support. And that's not good.
All this is by way of agreeing with your message of caution, John.
Ken
