ask your doctor to put you on Family Medical Leave Act...you can take that in daily increments. Find out guidelines for companies and protect yourself further with Dr. excuses.
When I worked I called my Dr. everytime I had to miss work and got a Dr. slip faxed to my employer.

Also, I don't know anything about it, but most states have some kind of income under SSI program on a temporary basis.
