Your grandma most likely uses oxygen at a very low flow rate (1 or 2 liters/minute) through those nose tubes. To be of use against CH, oxygen must be taken at a high flow rate (about 10 liters/minutes) using a face mask, the non-rebreathing type is to preferred.
I believe one of the characteristics of CH is the very rapid onset of pain, measured in minutes or even seconds. The end of the pain is usually very fast too.
Shadows are the residual lingering pain between attacks.
