I feel for you, Melissa. One thing that's worked for me is sleeping in a recliner, and for some reason I can wake up a little earlier than kip 8, and can start my own therapy quickly, which is to immediately gulp a large glass of cold water, take an 800mg Ibuprofen, and then go outside and walk as quickly as possible for about 15 minutes. As I walk, the pain reduces, usually subsiding by the time I get back to the house. Some nights if I wake up early enough during the attack, I can simply stand outside and breathe deeply after drinking the water. Keep your head upright. It helps.
I know this won't work for everyone but it works most of the time for me, and this happens 3-4 times a night, but I do get some sleep inbetween and don't have to wake up my family.
Peace be with you.
