My guess is that when you apply heat or do something extreme, the system reacts something like a burn or when your feet are cold. Maybe it draws away enough blood to allow a slight constriction of the vessel which I think is probably pressing on some idiotically placed nerve-ending in our skulls. Why oh why is it there! You'll have to ask someone better-informed than I about the technical stuff. I'm way behind the curve on the newer info and drugs. - -Charlie
