I assumed the audience would presume the characters in the joke were male...silly me. That's a lot to expect of an American audience.
As to the gender of the flies...I personally believe they were gay male flies and it was unclear if they understood the terminology or not. Now, their lack of understanding of the terminology could be because they were males, or it could be that they were gay, or it COULD be that they were just expat American flies, EH?
