Had one bout with shingles about half way through 15 years of clusters, left an awfull scar on my forehead. The doctor said I was run down from lack of sleep and my system could no longer hold back the small pox virus that we all carry around.
I can't see any real tie to clusters other than getting so run down that any active virus might surface.
